We sent a balikbayan box to my parents in Leyte last September and after two months and two emails I was informed the box is on its way to delivery. Yey! That means my father will not spend minutes either calling or sending me text messages on where their box got to. Wait, he has to because we agreed to talk should the box get there. He already spent money asking me why the box is not delivered yet like I would know what happened. I can’t wait for their call and hearing the excitement in their voice. I may not have sent goodies for everybody but there was enough in that box to make a number of people happy. I just hope they will get it in one piece and in its original packaging.

another round
November 20th, 2009
The husband is complaining of stuffy nose and the little man has runny nose. Again. It seems like they have cold every week just a few days after they feel better. I hate to think the husband will take more medicine again. I hope he will be fine by resting and staying home. As for the little man I might have to get the vaporizer out if his gets worse. I don’t know what is causing their cold. Could it be the weather or is it something else? I know that the air filter was replaced recently since we bought a couple air filters a few weeks ago. I don’t know what to think. I hope my family will feel better or this will be a problem. A recurring one at that. Maybe we should replace the filter more often to stop this from happening.
short walk
November 19th, 2009
We went to the beach today so the husband can walk. We have not done it in a while and he is not feeling good so we figured a short walk and the ocean breeze will be good for him. The little man and I stayed in the car and waited. I wanted him to do some much needed walking and he could not do that when we are with him because the little man wanders everywhere which aggravates me and we almost always end up back in the car even before we started. It is a shame that he could not do brisk walk anymore due to his injuries because I know he loved to do it when he was able. I hope his coming doctor’s visit will bring good news to us.
kids and frugality
November 18th, 2009
I have a friend whose stepson is into games. He makes his father buy all the games he wants to have and the father is more than happy to cater to his son’s whims. It must get expensive since these games are not cheap and even if you buy one, say once a week, the expense still adds up in the long run. She said they have an xbox but I don’t know if they do have a Wii yet. I think Wii is more fun. Even if these games are fun though I will not introduce this kind of games to the little man until he is old enough to save his allowance to buy it. He has to realize what it is like to spend his own money so he will not be asking for whatever he wants all the time. Although the husband spent money on games for his older son too when the kid was living with him and I know he will do it for our little boy I don’t think I will let him. Sometimes to teach a kid a lesson on frugality is to let them know what it feels like when they have to spend their hard earned money. I don’t want him to grow up thinking he can get what he wants when he wants it because mom and dad will give it to him.
almost
November 17th, 2009
I was up late last night. I could not sleep. I was annoyed at the husband and I had to cool off. It was just another one of our arguments on some things we do not agree on. Unlike him, I do not move on mere minutes after an argument. I usually sit seething about it and I have to do that for a while until I get over my spell and only then can I be back to normal. No, I don’t hold a grudge. When I am angry I am angry but when I get over it then I forget about it. Life is too short to carry on a burden like that. Anyway, while I was waiting for myself to get my act straight, I was online with a serious thought of blowing his money. How bad was that? Lol. I looked at Dan Brown’s latest book which I really really want to buy, looked for Nursery Rhyme DVDs for the little man, looked at Dansko sandals while wondering what my mom’s shoe size is, and looked at laptops. I have had items on my cart and was thinking of checking out when I realized I was being childish. I realized the husband being broke makes me broke too. I don’t want to do that. No sir! You could tell I was starting to see sense huh? Well, I went to bed last night wondering if I did the right thing not buying even the book. I should have. Maybe I will when we go to Wal-mart because that is the only store I could find which sells the said book cheap. And from now on, I better hide my cards when I think an argument is brewing just to be on the safe side.
he said no
November 11th, 2009
The stepdaughter wants us to go with her family on a vacation to Orlando. The husband said no because we are in a tight spot right now. Besides he probably does not like the thought of having three toddlers (one is ours) running around or throwing fits while there. He told me he would like to go though if only we can afford it. Sadly we can’t. Plus there is the problem with his health. We could not even go to North Carolina which is nearer even if carolina designs will tell us we will get half off on one of their vacation homes. Going on a trip is very tempting but it will be stressful if we go knowing we are on a tight budget and then still has to pay bills when we get back. When we have the money and he feels better we will surely go on a trip like what we did last December when we went to Orlando and stayed three days. We had a blast and we were fine when we get back because we used the husband’s work bonus to go.
escabeche ala poray
November 11th, 2009

A friend gave us a few fresh fish yesterday and so I thought of fixing my favorite fish recipe escabeche. It is basically a sweet-sour-kinda hot recipe that my grandmother taught me to fix when I was a little girl. I used ripe Jalapeno peppers instead of bell peppers which gave it the spice it needed. Of course I also used up a lot of ginger and an onion to give it more flavor. The result is shown in the picture above. If you notice there is more sauce than what most people prefer. It is because I like it that way. I usually pour the sauce on top of my rice. And it makes it easier to heat the leftovers when there is more sauce. I have had this for dinner last night, breakfast and lunch today. I also already had to take an antacid but wth it was worth it.
denied
November 10th, 2009
I have read from a friend’s blog that her mother-in-law who is on retirement age got hurt and have to be hospitalized. She does not have any source of income, she is sick and she is old. Her kids helped her apply for social security disability and, lo and behold, she got denied. It must have been disappointing for them. When I told the husband about it he said that he read somewhere that a big percentage of the claims are denied the first time and that if a person really wants to get disability she has to get a disability appeal to supposedly help her to have her claim approved. I do not personally know why it has to work this way, I mean if a person is disabled and by all means have all the proof, why not approve him the first time? Maybe the government works on some kind of a plan? I don’t really know. I sure hope though that her appeal will be approved for her own sake.
