kids and frugality

November 18th, 2009

I have a friend whose stepson is into games. He makes his father buy all the games he wants to have and the father is more than happy to cater to his son’s whims. It must get expensive since these games are not cheap and even if you buy one, say once a week, the expense still adds up in the long run. She said they have an xbox but I don’t know if they do have a Wii yet. I think Wii is more fun. Even if these games are fun though I will not introduce this kind of games to the little man until he is old enough to save his allowance to buy it. He has to realize what it is like to spend his own money so he will not be asking for whatever he wants all the time. Although the husband spent money on games for his older son too when the kid was living with him and I know he will do it for our little boy I don’t think I will let him. Sometimes to teach a kid a lesson on frugality is to let them know what it feels like when they have to spend their hard earned money. I don’t want him to grow up thinking he can get what he wants when he wants it because mom and dad will give it to him.
